Russia day

Russian Declaration of Sovereignty Day or Russia Day – one of the “youngest” state holidays in the country. On 12 June 1990, in the situation of the sovereignty of Union Republics in the USSR, the first Congress of the People’s Deputies of the RSFSR adopted the State Sovereignty Declaration of Russia. In 1994, this day was declared a state holiday. Officially – this is the most important of the country’s modern state holidays. From this date, it is possible to perceive the beginning of the formation of the new Russian state, based on the principles of constitutional federalism, equal rights and partnership.

On this day, we honour our homeland, our Russia; we honour a country with a thousand-year history and unique heritage, a country uniting numerous peoples, territories and cultures over a vast terrain. This holiday of all-Russian, state and national unity is observed today in all regions of the country. Russia greets this holiday as a one nation. The achievements and labours of each citizen constitute the power and dignity of this great country. Russia’s prosperity is created in each of its regions, and it is for the sake of its people and in their name that the Russian state is strengthening and developing.

For each person, Russia begins in their home town. Therefore, Russia Day is not only a public occasion but also a personal occasion. Wherever we are born, wherever we grow up – it is all our native Fatherland. And together we are united as one, powerful Russian nation.

Each of our citizens knows through personal experience that it is better to live within a strong, solid family. They know that it is necessary to be considerate and attentive to Russia. Only the solidarity of the nation can make Russia economically powerful, open to the world, only together is it possible to make the Russian state stable, and the country itself comfortable for the people living in it, for their children and grandchildren.

Today, many people believe that this holiday is newly established, forgetting about the many centuries in its history that Russia has asserted its state system and achieved the positions of the strong state, which stretches from the Pacific Ocean to the Baltic Sea.

The independence of Russia – is the result of the labour of our predecessors. The independence of Russia – is the result of the military exploits of those who have spent their lives defending the stability of the country’s borders. The independence of Russia – this is the contemporary chronicle of the bravery of our compatriots who oppose criminal attempts to divide the state system.

The declaration, adopted on 12 June 1990, became the symbol of the rebirth of a renewed Russia, ensuring the conditions for constructing a democratic society. The sovereignty of the Russian Federation was proclaimed in the name of the highest principles – a guarantee to each person of an inherent right to a worthy life, free development and use of language, and to each ethnic group – the right to self-determination in choosing their national state and national cultural identity.

Today, Russia has a foundation on which it is possible to build a solid future for our great Fatherland, a future for many years and decades to come. We know our strengths – in consolidation; our victories – in a solid unity. Russia sees its possibilities and recognises them. Russia is certain of its strengths and this confidence comes from the citizens of the country, from the entire Russian society
