Symphonica Toscanini

Conductor: Lorin Maazel

Symphonica Toscanini (in May 2006 renamed from Philharmonica Toscanini) was established by an accurate selection from the 200 instrumentalists the Toscanini Foundation has available for its performance rehearsals for the symphonic and opera seasons. The part of primary role is instead vested with musicians of great international fame, who already play these roles in the orchestras of the Foundation or who simultaneously collaborate with the Philharmonic Orchestra in conjunction with the main European orchestras. Primarily dedicated to the performance of the vast international symphonic repertoire, the orchestra avails itself in standings of the collaboration of the most important orchestra conductors and of the most prestigious soloists. It boasts an artistic organization based on the continuity of commitment and management, on great flexibility and ability to positively react to the requests made by the music market. The creation of this high profile orchestral instrument originated from a need to refine the performance skills – in the symphonic field – of the best instrumentalists of the Toscanini Foundation, and in the creation of an orchestra that could be capable of taking on a leading role on the international scenario by assuring the level of excellence that represents the key objective for the Foundation’s development strategies.

Orchestra organizes its concerts in the newest Auditorium Niccolo Paganini in Parma, designed by architect Renzo Piano and inaugurated at the end of 2001. Artists such as Michel Plasson, Yoram David, Djansung Kakhidze, Salvatore Accardo, Michele Campanella, Mstislav Rostropovich, Uto Ughi, Heinrich Schiff and Gianluigi Gelmetti, who were invited for the 2002 season, will be accompanied in the 2003 season – besides Lorin Maazel, Mstislav Rostropovich and Uto Ughi – by personalities like Georges Pretre, Vladimir Spivakov, Gary Bertini, Rafael Fruhbeck de Burgos, Salvatore Accardo, Eliahu Inbal, Stanislav Bunin.

Under the prestigious direction of Maestro Lorin Maazel, appointed as first Music Director from May 2004, the orchestra met with the unanimous approval of the press, that highlighted the excellent performing skills, comparing it to the best European and American orchestras. It also had great success amongst the major Italian and foreign music managers, who are gradually including it in the most qualified national and international concert seasons. After its inauguration concert in Strasbourg, Symphonica Toscanini then performed in Madrid and in the Senate Chamber in Rome for the traditional Christmas concert that was Eurovision telecasted, always conducted by Maazel’s baton with enormous successes and gratifying criticisms. It inaugurated the 2003 Music Festival of Lugano with Eliahu Inbal and 2004 Festival Benedetti Michelangeli of Brescia and Bergamo, and the Rome’s Festival Euromediterraneo, both with Lorin Maazel.

During 2004, concerts are foreseen in Spain, Switzerland, France, Turkey and Hungary. In October 2004 the orchestra performed in Washington D.C.’s Kennedy Center Concert Hall under Lorin Maazel and in Beijing Music Festival under Michel Plasson and, in December 2004, in Switzerland conducted by Mstislav Rostropovich. Conductors invited for next season include also artists such as Jeffrey Tate, Charles Dutoit, Georges Pretre, Yuri Temirkanov.
