Arnold Kats

Orchestra: Novosibirsk Academic Symphony Orchestra

Born in Baku, Arnold Kats graduated from the Central Music School of the Moscow State Conservatoire (violin). In 1947–1949 he was a student of the Leningrad State Conservatoire and later began conducting lessons there under guidance of Prof. Ilya Musin. Since 1956 he is artistic director and chief conductor of the Novosibirsk Academic Symphony Orchestra. Since 1957 he also teaches at the Novosibirsk State Conservatoire. Many of his pupils have been prize winner at major international competitions and work extensively in Russia and abroad.

In the 70s and 80s Arnold Kats headed the Student Symphony Orchestra of the Novosibirsk State Conservatoire. Many times he conducted the Russian-American Youth Orchestra. With the Novosibirsk Symphony orchestra he toured Germany, Holland, England, Scotland, France, Belgium, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Yugoslavia, Japan.

As guest conductor Arnold Kats toured Denmark, Belgium, Sweden, Germany, Great Britain, Norway, Japan, Israel, Luxemburg, the Netherlands, the USA, South America. He was conductor of the stage production of ‘War and Peace’ by Prokofiev, ballet ‘Raymonda’ by Glazunov and ‘The Sleeping Beauty’ by Tchaikovsky at the Novosibirsk State Opera and Ballet Theatre, ‘Il Trovatore’ at the Maly Opera Theatre of St. Petersburg. Performing with the Novosibirsk Academic Symphony Orchestra and other orchestras under Arnold Kats were Svyatoslav Richter, Emil Gilels, David Oistrakh, Igor Oistrakh, Mstislav Rostropovich, Leonid Kogan, Bella Davidovich, Yulian Sitkovetsky, Dmitry Sitkovetsky, Gidon Kremer, Daniil Shafran, Dmitry Bashkirov, Nikolai Petrov, Oleg Kagan, Natalia Gutman, Yuri Bashmet, Mikhail Pletnev, Vadim Repin, Maxim Vengerov etc. Arnold Kats recorded with Novosibirsk Akademic Symphony Orchestra, his albums are released by Sony Classical, ‘Arte Nova’, ‘Russian Seasons’. He is a Laureate of the State Premium of Russia and was awarded the Order ‘For Service to Homeland’.
