Antonio Pappano

Orchestra: Orchestra of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia

Currently Music Director of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, Antonio Pappano is the youngest conductor to have ever been invited to this position. Previously, he has been Music director of the Theatre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels and the Norwegian Opera. He has also been principal guest conductor of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra.

Born in London of Italian parents, his work as pianist and assistant conductor rapidly led to his engagement in theatres throughout the world. Most notably, he was assistant to Daniel Barenboim for numerous productions at the Bayreuth Festival.

Antonio Pappano’s operatic debut took place at the Norwegian Opera where he was soon named Music director. During this same time, Antonio Pappano made his conducting debuts at the English National Opera, Covent Garden, the San Francisco Opera, the Lyric Opera of Chicago, the Theatre du Chatelet and the Berlin Staatsoper. At the age of 32 Pappano was named Music Director of the Theatre Royal de la Monnaie, where, in addition to conducting numerous opera productions, he continued his work as a pianist by accompanying many international singers at La Monnaie. In 1999, he made his debut with the Bayreuth Festspiele conducting a new production of Lohengrin.

Concurrently with his obligations at the Royal Opera House, Antonio Pappano is also Music Director of the orchestra of the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome. He conducts regularly with the London Symphony Orchestra, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam.

Mr. Pappano records for EMI Classics. His numerous recordings include Don Carlos, La Boheme, Il trittico, Werther, Manon, Iltrovatore, Tosca and La rondine, which was awarded Best Recording of the Year by Gramophone Magazine.  Recordings with the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House include Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde with Placido Domingo and Strauss with Natalie Dessay.  His awards for musical achievement include ‘Artist of the Year’ in the 2000 Gramophone Awards, the Royal Philharmonic Society Music Award 2005 in the conductor category and the “Premio Abbiati” in 2006.
His latest releases with EMI Classics are two discs dedicated to some of Tchaikovsky’s greatest music, Overtures & Fantasies and Symphonies 4, 5 & 6 recorded with the Orchestra of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia.
