The Rostov Academic Symphonic Orchestra drew attention of musical society, conductors and prominent soloists from the first years of its existence. The orchestra was founded in 1935.

Many famous conductors led the orchestra in various years: Bruno Berman, Nikolay Anosov, Marc Paverman, Leonid Kats, Semen Kogan. Nowadays an honored artist of the Russian Federation Yuri Tkachenko is the art director and chief conductor of the orchestra.
In 1984 the orchestra won the prize of the Russian Symphonic Orchestras Contest. In 1994 the orchestra took part in Tchaikovsky’s 10th International Contest. Same year the orchestra was titled “Academic”.
The orchestra’s repertoire boasts a great variety of symphonic literature: starting from medieval orchestral music till contemporary composers’ trials. A significant part of the orchestra’s performances were solo performances of A.Khachaturian, D. Shostakovich, T.Khrennikov, R.Shchedrin, A.Ashpay, A.Schnitke, G.Kancheli, Y.Falik and others. The orchestra performed with such worldwide known musicians as M.Rostropovich, D.Oistrach, L.Kogan, J.Zack, J.Flier, S.Neigaus, B.Gutnikov, D.Bashkirov, N.Petrov, R.Kerer, N.Gutman, E.Obraztsova, Y.Bashmet.
