Seoul Philharmonic orchestra

For the past 60 years, the Seoul Philharmonic has played a central role in enriching the cultural lives of Korea’s citizens. In 2005, under the leadership of Maestro Myung Whun Chung, the orchestra was reborn, setting a new standard for orchestral music in Korea.
The Seoul Philharmonic presents a wide range of repertoire from Mozart to Messiaen and continues to break records by playing for largely sold out audiences. With distinguished guest conductors and soloists, Seoul Philharmonic continues to take the initiative in shaping the Korean classical music scene.
The Seoul Philharmonic plays a leading role in bringing the most challenging contemporary works to the Seoul public through its innovative Ars Nova series directed by internationally renowned Korean composer Unsuk Chin who also serves as the orchestra’s composer-in-residence.
Apart from traditional concert hall venues, the Seoul Philharmonic performs more than 60 outreach concerts annually visiting parks, classrooms and local churches. Customized education programs such as Let’s Play with the Orchestra, Music Story with Maestro for children, Woodwind Academy for music majors, Pre-concert Lecture for adult audiences are all part of the orchestra’s vision to expand its future audience base. Performing mainly at the Sejong Center and Seoul Arts Center, the Seoul Philharmonic will have a residence hall on the Art Island of Han River upon its completion in 2014.
